What’s involved in securing the services of a wedding celebrant?
There are two parts to a celebrant’s service. Firstly, there’s the regulatory side which needs to be adhered to in order for the marriage to be legally recognised in Australia. And secondly, there’s the less formal, although some couples might say, more significant ceremonial aspects of day which is what you will remember for years to come.
A Notice of Intended Marriage form is required to be submitted to your wedding celebrant one month prior to your wedding date. You can lodge this up to 18 months in advance. In Australia you need to be over the age of 18 to marry, and you must show your birth certificate, or other appropriate documentation if not born in Australia. If either of you has been married before you will also need to supply your Divorce Decree Absolute papers, or a Death Certificate of a previous spouse.
Usually all of this is attended to when we meet to begin planning the ceremony. Should a bride wish to change her name, I can also organise the paperwork.
Full details of the government requirements can be found at the Australian Attorney-General’s Department website.
Planning For Your Special Day
To prepare weddings I like to get to know my couples and understand the style, feel and location of their wedding. After gathering a range of information about you both, I draft every wedding individually, and we work on it together until it feels right.
I suggest we meet again not long before your wedding for a rehearsal, either on-site or elsewhere, to run through the ceremony and confirm details of placement, sequence of speakers, bridal party, and so on. A quick rehearsal not only makes the day less stressful, it’s a fun prelude to the big day.
The Ceremony Itself
On the day, I will arrive and be set up early, and liaise with musicians, photographers and event staff so that you can relax and enjoy the lead-up. The ceremony will be one of the most magical moments of your life. After the ceremony, you can enjoy your celebrations and I will formally register your wedding.
Feel free to give me a call anytime to talk about your wedding plans and whether or not I’m the right person to perform your wedding ceremony – 0427 021 115.
